Bruce Donnelly

Bruce is an award-winning US–South African filmmaker whose work spans documentary feature films and short-form storytelling, with a strong focus on social justice, culture, and conservation.

His credits include the highly acclaimed Cuban documentary Alumbrones, described as “insightful and memorable” by The New York Times, as well as the international award-winning film The Black Mambas, which tells the story of South Africa’s first all-female anti-poaching unit. The film was shortlisted for an Academy Award and became the catalyst for Bruce’s ongoing body of work focused on wildlife conservation in southern Africa, including elephant and lion protection initiatives and his latest documentary project series, A Place For Us.

Beyond conservation filmmaking, Bruce has also worked closely with Indigenous communities in the United States. He collaborated with leaders and members of the Wampanoag Tribe on Cape Cod to produce King Philip’s Belt and other short films, helping to re-tell key historical events from Indigenous perspectives. King Philip’s Belt went on to be exhibited internationally, including in London and at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
